Overview of park

A large campground just 14 miles from Acadia National Park. There are many campsites closer to the park, but we only booked a month ahead, so we settled on Timberland acres as it was the closest-in with space.

  1. Site Quality = 3.5/5
  2. Facilities = 4/5
  3. Location = 5/5
  4. Pet-friendliness = 3/5

Overall rating = 3.9

Site quality

The big rig section has many pull-through and back-in sites which are easy to get into and have plenty of space for a TOAD. The main roads are paved and the sites are gravel. They each have a 50A full-hookup, a table, and a firepit.

As seems to be the all too common case, the big rig section was a field surrounded by trees. Sometimes it feels like a way to maximize the amount of RV’s that fit in the space, but we also suspect that it so that satellite dishes can see the southern sky. It’s not our favorite style of a campground, so it gets dinged. If I’m reincarnated as a cow I’ll adjust the rating to 5/5.

The view from our site gives an idea of the layout

The location is great, there’s a Walmart and Home Depot close by and the rest of the town of Ellsworth is easy to access and has all services. The Ellsworth post office accepts General Delivery, we didn’t try and have anything delivered to the campground. Beware that there are several post offices in the Arcadia area that list General Delivery, but they are small shacks that only open half days and are not really suitable for deliveries, so focus on the bigger ones in Ellsworth or Bar Harbor.

Facilities

We are not big on using facilities so we didn’t use any. In the big rig section, there are no convenient bathrooms or laundry facilities, but they do appear to be there on the road towards the exit.

Location

As they say, Location, Location, Location. Sure it would be nice to be closer into the park, however being near Ellsworth is very convenient for supplies, services and a broader variety of restaurants.  We also didn’t have to deal with heavy traffic in and around Bar Harbor.

Pet-friendliness

The only place to walk the dogs are around the roads; there is only a small piece of field that isn’t used for RV’s.  Sure, a 50A site is handy for running air-conditioners when leaving the mutts at home. At the end of the day, this is a home base for exploring the Park.  All the hiking trails allow dogs and Little Long Pond allows off-leash walking. The rating is for the campgrounds pet-friendliness, so it gets a ding, but be aware that Arcadia gets 5/5 just to make up for it.

Summary

Next time we will book ahead and try to get closer to the Park. Also, we loved Schoodic Woods Campground so we would spend more time there before visiting the hustle and bustle of the main Bar Harbor side of the park. All that said, I’d stay here again, its functional and the local area make it worthwhile.
